Decide on a Platform: Windows, Mac or Chrome
In recent years Google’s Chrome laptops have waded into the laptop market, effectively adding a third choice to the long-standing two-horse race between Mac and PC.
The differences between these three laptop types are largely due to the different operating systems installed.
Mac laptops run MacOS, PCs run Windows and Chrome books run the Chrome Operating System.
The Operating system you choose is largely down to personal preference.
If you plan to use your machine mostly for work and you have become accustomed to using a Windows in the office, we suggest buying a PC, if you usually work on a Mac, you made prefer to buy a Mac.
For machines running the Chrome OS, keep in mind this operating system is safe and secure but is more limited than Windows and the MacOS. However, its low price point makes it an attractive option for individuals who just want a machine for web browsing and as a video and music player.
Do you Want a 2-in-1?
Hybrid devices have exploded in popularity in the last 10 years. A hybrid device is a device that can act both as a laptop and as a tablet.
They usually come in two types.
Type 1: These have a detachable screen that acts as the tablet
Type 2: Flexible laptops have hinges that bend 360 degrees, allowing the user to change modes by twisting the keyboard to the other side of the laptop screen.
Although 2-in-1 laptops are certainly useful, we would urge buyers to carefully consider if they need this duel functionality. If not, you will likely get superior specifications for the same money from a traditional clamshell laptop.
Consider the size
When selecting a laptop it is always important to consider how portable you need your machine to be. A laptop for a home office, for example, will likely be relatively stationary but a student’s laptop will be dragged from one lecture to another making its size and weight something to be carefully considered.
Size Guide:
11 – 12 inches. These are the thinnest and lightest systems available. Their screens are sized from 11 to 12-inches and they can weigh anywhere from 1 kilogram to 1.5 Kilograms.
13 – 14 inches. Probably the best balance of functionality and portability. We recommend trying to get a 13 – 14-inch laptop that weighs under 1.8 kilograms
15 to 16 inches. 15-inch laptop screens remain the standard laptop size for many users. The larger screen makes for a better viewing experience but you will be looking at a weight anywhere from 1.8 kilograms to 2.5 kilograms.
17 to 18 inches. The sacrificed portability is made up for in processing power. These large laptops will have the space to install high end-processors allowing users to play modern games and carry out processor-intensive work.
